How to Whitewash Brick

How to Whitewash Brick

I received more questions and comments about my white washed brick fireplace than I would have ever expected.  I admit – I love the rustic feel of this look and I also love how it lightens the overall appearance of our family room.  So, I thought I would share how quick and easy it is to white wash brick.   There are a number of ways to white wash brick but we chose the old fashioned approach of “lime white washing”.  This approach gives you that weathered look that changes over time.  If too much color wears away – you can just reapply to...

Kitchen’s Latest Trends – Slate appliances/brick backsplashes

Everyone who loves to cook wants a beautiful new kitchen, right?  Even if you can’t afford the expense of a “gourmet” kitchen – what are some of the latest trends  you can add to make your kitchen look and feel updated? New appliances always improve the look of your kitchen and the latest trend is slate appliances.  I love stainless appliance but they are hard to keep clean and show scratches.   Also, many people don’t like stainless because they seem cold and commercial.  So check out the new slate appliances.  They have a similar look to...

The Versatile Garden Stool

The Versatile Garden Stool                               Go ahead, put your feet up, your drink down or tuck it under, the garden stool is my favorite accent piece.  How did we live without it?  This little gem has changed the way occasional tables are designed and ushered in an era that adds a little joie de vivre to any room and any decorating style. Pick your style, pick your color, today’s garden stools are made of ceramic, wire, wood, plastic, various metals, even recycled/repurposed tires.  Even though the classic Chinese garden stool...

Updating Window Treatments

I don’t believe in throwing out the old and redecorating a space with everything new – it disregards your client’s past and flies in the face of “green decorating” – which I am so fond. Case and point – the pinched-pleated moiré drape.  Moiré is a fabric with a wavy (watered) appearance made mainly from silk. It is also known as “watered silk”.   The popularity of moiré drapes has faded in recent years with so many other fabric and style choices. One of my favorite clients had dated cream...

Pretty Potted Patio Plants

Pretty Patio Potted Plants                                                      Summer is in full swing and everywhere you look flowers are in bloom!  I love the beauty this time of year especially living on the East coast where 5 months out of the year the landscape is barren!  Patios and Porches should  provide some of that lush beauty and that means plenty of stylish container pots.  After all, these outdoor spaces need accessories too!  Here are some tips for creating a lush colorful potted garden from spring right into fall.  Move your...

Rooms Always Wear White Well!

Rooms Always Wear White Well                           Well, it’s Memorial Day Weekend and it’s time to pull our whites out of the closet for another summer season!  Isn’t it great that white never goes out of season in a home?  Easy, breezy white looks great in our home anytime.  Who doesn’t love its crisp clean look? Here are some great ways to feature white in your home.  My favorite, add crown molding to any room and paint it high gloss white.  It will make the most subtle wall colors pop and draw the eye upward giving the sense of height...

Personality + Design

Personality + Design

I walked through a home sale this week. I was initially struck by how beautifully the house was decorated, right down to the minutest detail. On second glance I thought I was walking through an Ethan Allen show home.  Every piece in every room was gorgeous in its own right – but where was the homeowner’s personality?  Where is that personal mark that really makes a house “a home”? Most of us can’t afford to fill our homes with “high end” furnishings and you know what? – if I could afford it – I wouldn’t! I want my home to feel warm and...

New Modern – Essentially Eclectic

New Modern – Essentially Eclectic

I love how decorating has evolved in the 21st century.  Popular furniture has the sleek lines of the 1950’s and 1960’s.  Less is often more.  But what is different about today’s decorating trends?  It’s the often playful but environmentally conscience mix of the old with the new. It’s mixing East with West, it’s methodically mismatching.  In short, it’s modern eclectic. In my opinion, redecorating does NOT mean getting rid of everything!  If you are updating a space and want to create a more modern style but still want to keep some of your...

I Love Christmas!

I Love Christmas!

I love Christmas – I’ve always loved Christmas!  I couldn’t wait to put up my 1st Christmas tree in my 1st apartment after college!  It wasn’t very big, but my favorite symbol of   the Season was standing in my little living room!  It’s the smell of evergreens that I enjoy so much – that and all the lights and ornaments that create the bejeweled king of the holidays!  I use a lot of evergreens to decorate during the season – especially outdoors.  It is remarkable what you can create with evergreens, holly & boxwoods.  You can create...
