Radiant Orchid – Color of the Year

Pantone Color of the Year                             Radiant Orchid is Pantone’s 2014 Color of the Year!  You’ll see it on the runway and in interior design this year and beyond.  It is the magical blend of pink, fuchsia and purple, a feel good color that radiates a modern confidence. As bold as this color is it pairs beautifully with so many color choices.  Let’s consider some of these delicious pairings: Radiant Orchid and orange walls for a young girl’s bedroom – sounds and looks perfect together.    Radiant Orchid and neutral gray for the master bedroom.  Select a wallpaper of radiant...

Decorating with Burlap

Decorating with BurlapNovember 7, 2013 The holidays are fast approaching and it got me thinking about what is trending this year.  Those of us who have been around a while know what’s old becomes new at some point and right now – burlap is all the rage!  It is a great, inexpensive & multifunctional fabric. Most people think of burlap as a fall fabric, but you can use it all year long.  Lately, I’ve seen it used in weddings, upholstery, picture matting, table setting, lamp shades, drapes, bed skirts the list endless. But back to the holidays.  Consider using it as a table runner at...

Redecorating a Theta House

Updating Theta House Redecorating a Theta House I had the pleasure of joining the design team for the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation to redecorate the Zeta Tau house on the University of Delaware campus yesterday.   The team, headed by Karen Ledbetter and joined by designers who are all Theta alums, provide their expertise pro bono to redecorate various Theta houses throughout the country.  What fun to create a beautiful new living space for the sisters of Kappa Alpha Theta.  Our theme was based our colors of gold and black and designed in a timeless style but adding youthful accents.  The...

Mix in Acrylic Furniture for a Cool Vibe!

Many people would hesitate to use acrylic furniture because it looks so contemporary and that may not be their style.  But mixing it in as an accent with traditional or transitional pieces provides that decorating edge that makes the space look so current. For example, I like to use either a Lucite table with upholstered pieces or a wood table with acrylic chairs.  Acrylic Furniture gives the...

I just returned from filming 3 segments on Creative Living with Sheryl Borden.  Creative Living is part of PBS programming and is filmed at KENW in Portales, New Mexico.  Beyond the fact, that Portales is not very easy to get to from Philadelphia, I really enjoyed the experience.   Sheryl was a wonderful host and it was loads of fun to be a guest on TV – Lights, Camera, Action!  My segments included Creative and Inexpensive Decorating Tips, How to Creative beautiful Window Treatments by Color Blocking, and finally How to Select the Right Color Palette for your Space.  My segments will...

Updating Window Treatments

I don’t believe in throwing out the old and redecorating a space with everything new – it disregards your client’s past and flies in the face of “green decorating” – which I am so fond. Case and point – the pinched-pleated moiré drape.  Moiré is a fabric with a wavy (watered) appearance made mainly from silk. It is also known as “watered silk”.   The popularity of moiré drapes has faded in recent years with so many other fabric and style choices. One of my favorite clients had dated cream moiré drapes with matching swags.  She really...
